Here are some free events to round off your summer holidays in Durham with some fun.

As the clock ticks down to the new school term in County Durham, there are still plenty of events going on, and they don't always have to involve you spending. Here are the Durham free events this week, August 27 to September 1 2019.

Free Durham events this week #1: Rex the Dinosaur, Derwent Waterside Park

Head to Derwent Waterside Park at Derwent Reservoir on Wednesday August 28 10am to 2pm for a chance to meet Rex the Dinosaur. Rex is an eight foot tall, 18 foot long Tyrannosaurus Rex, who'll be there with his handlers. There will also be an opportunity with the handlers to make footprints.

There will also be appearances from County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service, Durham Police's Dog Section and Northumbria Police's Marine Unit, plus Chase and Marshall from Paw Patrol. You can also park for free at Derwent Reservoir.

Free Durham events this week #2: Durham Photographic Society Annual Exhibition

Until August 31, the Durham Photographic society is holding its annual exhibition at Durham Cathedral. The theme of this year's exhibition is 'the towering North East', and there are 60 images that illustrate aspects of the North East that make it such a special place. It's in the north nave aisle of the cathedral and is free.

Free Durham events this week #3: Family fun day, Durham Marketplace

On Friday August 30, there's a Durham family fun day in the marketplace, with the police community team, Diggerland excavator, vintage bus, and Disney songs from Ashley.

The Durham family fun day will also include face painting, storytelling, and a children's ride, as well as the 'Meet the Mini-Beasts' display in the entrance ramp to the Market Hall. It runs from 11am to 3pm in the marketplace. Some of the attractions will have a charge but others will be free.

Free Durham events this week #4: Horticultural Show, Newton Aycliffe

Held at the OakLeaf Sports Complex, the Newton Aycliffe Horticultural Show 2019 takes place from August 31 to September 1. Entry is free and there are classes for children to take part in too. For more information contact Great Aycliffe Town Council on 01325 300 700.

Free Durham events this week #5: Peterlee Agricultural Show

Head to Helford Road Playing Fields in Peterlee for the Peterlee Agricultural Show 2019. The 47th annual show will have a main arena and circus for an afternoon of displays.

Saturday entertainment on the main stage includes a mix of performances from dancers, cheerleaders, local singers and iconic tribute bands. There is also a fun fair, circus, craft market and horticultural show.

Sunday's entertainment includes vehicle displays, companion dog show and an afternoon of music on the main stage.

The Peterlee Agricultural Show takes place from August 31 to September 1.

Free Durham events this week #6: Simon Webb talk, Durham town hall

Author and historian Simon Webb details the incredible life of Durham celebrity, Polish nobleman, musician, high society entertainer and world-class flirt, Joseph Boruwlaski - the Little Count.

The Durham town hall talk takes place on Saturday August 31 at 1-2pm. The talk is free but booking is required on 03000 267955.
