While there's plenty of things to do in Durham, weeks can get expensive if you're always forking out for tickets and days out. So how about some Durham events where you don't need to dip your hand in your pocket?

Free Durham events this week #1: Northern Crafts, Witham

The Witham arts centre in Barnard Castle is hosting a craft sale with some fantastic locally-made items for sale, including jewellery, prints, jams, toys, cards, scarves, hats, chocolate, soaps, knitted-gifts, puzzles, wooden-gifts, bags, and vintage items. You're bound to find something you like amongst that little lot.

Northern Crafts takes place on Saturday March 9 at the Witham in Barnard Castle, and entry is free.

Free Durham events this week #2: British Science Week, Locomotion

British Science Week takes place from Friday March 8 to Sunday March 17 and there are a couple of British Science Week Durham events that you head along to fill your family's weekend.

One event is at Locomotion, the railway museum in Shildon. Every day from 10am to 4pm there will be a programme of schools and family learning activities focused around science, technology, engineering and maths. It's suitable for all ages.

Free Durham events this week #3: Durham Quintet, Palace Green

Part of Durham University Music Durham Lunchtime Concert Series, run by students from the Music Department but open to everyone, this Durham concert in the series features the Durham Quintet.

The concert takes place at the Durham University Music Department on Palace Green on Wednesday March 6; doors open at 1pm, the concert starts at 1.15pm and ends at 2pm. It's free entry.
