Here's your weekly roundup of events that won't cost a penny for the week of March 18-24. All of the fun and none of the cost.

While Durham has lots of events going on across the city, there are also quite a few events that you can enjoy for free. ExplorAR has rounded up the best - see what you can find below.

#1: Easter Wonderland, Durham Castle

Durham Castle Easter Wonderland is a family fun day. Run by Castle Community Action (CCA) and Durham Castle Museum, Durham Castle Easter Wonderland includes an Easter egg hunt, family fun tours, and Easter crafts.

Durham Castle Easter Wonderland takes place on Saturday March 23 2019 from 11-4pm. Family Fun Castle Tours will be available for sign up on arrival, and places will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. Tours start at 11.30am, 12.30pm, 1.30pm and 2.30pm.

Booking is essential and there are limited places per time slot. To book, head to the Eventbrite booking page.

#2: St Cuthbert's Festival, Durham Cathedral

From Wednesday March 20 to Saturday March 23, Durham Cathedral is holding a series of events to mark the St Cuthberts Festival. As well as events such as the St Cuthberts Procession, there are also talks, performances and services. You can see the full range of events on our story about St Cuthberts Festival.

#3: North East Musicians, Ushaw College

This photographic exhibition focuses on celebrated musicians from the North East or who perform regularly in the North East.  These musicians include Kathryn Tickell, Zoe Gilby, Folkworks, Martin Longstaff and Paul Edis. The photographic exhibition is put on by Durham Photographic Society and finishes on Saturday March 23.

#4: Chamber Groups, Durham University music department

One of the free lunchtime concerts at Durham University's music department on College Green next to Durham Cathedral, this time it's the turn of two quartets: Divinity Quintet, a chamber group made up of members from across a range of year groups and degree subjects at Durham University, and No Treble, courtesy of the newly-founded Chamber Music Society.

The free Durham lunchtime concert is on Wednesday March 20 from 1.15-2pm.

#5: Tchaikovsky violin concerto, Ushaw College

Another excellent free concert at Ushaw College, the Cobweb Orchestra plays Tchaikovsky’s violin concerto, and is joined by Fenella Humphreys, winner of the 2018 BBC Music Magazine Instrumental Award.

This Ushaw College concert takes place on Sunday March 24 at 2pm, and is free (there is a retiring collection).

#6: The Durham Showcase, Assembly Rooms Theatre

10 Durham University drama students have been picked out by three external industry professionals through open auditions. They then get a chance to perform in front of a larger audience, first in Durham and then in London. The Durham Showcase takes place in the Assembly Rooms Theatre on Friday March 22 at 7.30pm. #7: Ushaw organ recital, Roger Muttitt

A daytime concert featuring some fantastic organ music - and it's free. Roger Muttitt, who is Director of Music at St Chad’s College, Durham and Head of Music at Durham School, will be performing an organ recital in St Cuthbert's Chapel, Ushaw College. He'll be playing Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor BWV 582 by J.S. Bach; Chorale No. 2 in B minor by Cesar Franck, and variations on ‘America’ by Charles Ives.

The Ushaw organ recital takes place on Saturday March 23 at 2pm in St Cuthbert’s Chapel, Ushaw College. It's free to attend and there will be a retiring collection.
