Durham Lumiere 2019 festival makers are being asked to step forward and make this year's big festival something special.

Durham County Council and Lumiere producers Artichoke want people to come forward and volunteer to be Durham Lumiere 2019 festival makers.

The Durham Lumiere 2019 festival returns for four days in November with a 10th anniversary show. The 2019 event will feature highlights from past editions of the festival, alongside new unique installations.

More than 300 volunteers participated in 2017's Durham Lumiere event, and organisers are hoping for even more helpers in 2019.

Organisers say Durham Lumiere 2019 festival makers must be over 18 years old, have a friendly personality and a passion for Lumiere, and that people with different skills and life experiences are welcome.

First time volunteers are being encouraged to apply, as well as those who have helped at previous festivals.

Durham Lumiere 2019 festival maker Ann Ferguson, 64, has volunteered for the last two Lumiere festivals.

She said: "My role included supporting the thousands of people who come to the city, offering them a helping hand with directions to make sure they saw all the sights, and taking the odd snaps for people who wanted to cherish the moment.

"You get to speak to lots of people and they are so grateful for your assistance. It is great to see people having fun and enjoying your city, and it feels even better to know you are part of giving them a fantastic experience.

"People recognise you and families really get to know each other.

"I gained a lot of confidence, and it has motivated me to volunteer in other areas and experience new things. I also made lots of friends, and the community around Lumiere is diverse and fantastic.

"To anyone who is thinking of volunteering, I would say do not hesitate. Durham is a beautiful place and it is incredible to be a part of promoting the area. You get lots of support, and it is an experience you won't forget. I cannot wait to be part of Lumiere 2019."
