Jeremy Corbyn will speak at the Durham Miners Gala again this year, the fourth consecutive time he has done so.
It means that Jeremy Corbyn will have spoken at every Durham Miners Gala since becoming Labour Leader, speaking at four consecutive Big Meetings. He has also attended the Durham Miner Gala multiple times in his 36 years as an MP.
During the Big Meeting he has also often appeared on the balcony of the County Hotel to hear the bands as they play for the dignitaries.
Jeremy Corbyn is the latest name to be added to the lineup for the traditional Durham Racecourse speeches that take place in the afternoon of the Big Meeting. You can read the rest of the names in our Durham Miners Gala speeches story. Also, film director Ken Loach confirmed he will be giving a reading at the Durham Miners Gala cathedral service for 2019.
Alan Mardghum, secretary of the Durham Miners Association, said: "We are delighted and proud that Jeremy Corbyn is returning to Durham again to speak at this year's Big Meeting.
"Jeremy is the 15th leader of the Labour Party to speak at the Durham Miners Gala. He continues a tradition that dates back to the first Labour leader Keir Hardie, who spoke at The Big Meeting in 1906.
"The Durham Miners Association fully supports Jeremy's leadership of the party and his ongoing and tireless efforts to secure a better future for our communities, and for working class people across our nation.
"We look forward to inviting Jeremy to speak at next year's Gala as Labour Prime Minister."
Organisers are expecting large crowds again for the Durham Miners Gala 2019, with an estimated 200,000 people heading into the centre of Durham for last year's event. We've got the key times for the day in our Durham Miners Gala timings story.
