Durham's Fire and Ice Festival 2020 will soon be here, with expertly carved ice sculptures adorning our city's streets. So what's the theme this year?
Every year, all the ice sculptures feature a familiar face or scene based on that year's Fire and Ice theme.
Last year the Durham Fire and Ice theme was Heroes and Villains, and the ice sculptures included Thanos from Marvel's Infinity Gauntlet, Bumblebee the charismatic hero of the Transformers franchise, Ant and Dec as the local hero chosen by public vote, Lego Batman in Durham Cathedral cloisters, and the Thunderbird from Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.

The Fire and Ice Festival theme for 2020 is Travelling Through Time. The sculptures will all link to time, travel, and time travel, and although the full lineup of sculptures is yet to be revealed, one of the first to be announced is a replica of the famous Stephenson's Rocket, built right here in the North East.
Durham Fire and Ice 2020 Festival takes place on Friday and Saturday February 21-22. It will be open from 10am to 6.15pm.
Durham's Fire and Ice 2020 will bring some fantastically carved ice sculptures to the streets of Durham. They'll be placed on pedestals around Durham city centre and you can walk around and take your picture in front of them.
Previous Fire and Ice Durham themes have included sculptures of popular characters such as Paddington Bear, the Tin Man from the Wizard of Oz, and the Gruffalo, and each year there have been 10 sculptures on the theme.
You can also have a go at ice carving in Millennium Place, and watch live carving demonstrations by the professionals.
Another highlight of the Durham Fire and Ice Festival 2020 will be the fire performer, which is amazing to watch. The fire show will take place like last time in front of St Nicholas Church in the marketplace. Last year was pretty impressive with lots of shooting flames; you could feel the heat from halfway across the marketplace.
