Family events this weekend have a bit of everything, from oriental games to the world of Harry Potter to all the joys of newborn lambs in the Spring.

As we get half way through March, more and more of the events that we're finding for each weekend are taking place outdoors and making the most of the emerging Spring world. It's still pretty chilly, but whatever the weather throws at us, there's always events in Durham you can find to keep the children happy for the weekend.

So if you're looking for family-friendly events in Durham this weekend, there's plenty to find. Here's our pick of events for this weekend, Friday to Sunday March 15-17 2019.

Durham family events #1: Great Games, Durham Oriental Museum

Learn all about Chinese games in this two hour children's playing session at Durham Oriental Museum. Taking place between 1-3pm on Saturday March 16, Great Games is a chance to find out about Chinese games and make a spillikins game (which you might know as Pick Up Sticks!) to take home.

Drop in anytime in the two hours. Great Games is suitable for children aged five-11. Children must be accompanied. Durham Oriental Museum tickets cost £1.50 adults, 75p children and over 60s, £3.50 family (two adults three children).

Durham family events #2: Wonderful Windmills, Palace Green Library

As you might guess, this family event at Palace Green Museum is all about making windmills and seeing if you can make them spin by blowing on them.

Taking place between 1-3pm on Saturday and Sunday March 16 and 17, Wonderful Windmills is suitable for children aged five-11. Children must be accompanied. It's included in the exhibition admission price, which is adult tickets £7.50, concessions and children five and over £6.50, family ticket (two adults and two children) £25.

Durham family events #3: Super Saturday, Bowes Museum

The Bowes Museum event this weekend is Super Saturday, which includes 'sparkly' surprise activities.

It takes place on Saturday March 16 from 1-3pm. It's free for Bowes Museum ticket holders; if you're going with children then the best Bowes Museum admission ticket is the family pass, which costs £16 for one adult accompanying up to four under 18s, or £30 if there's a second adult in the group.

Durham family events #4: Harry Potter afternoon tea, Crook Hall

On Sunday March 17, Crook Hall is hosting a Harry Potter afternoon tea. Between 12-3pm, head to Crook Hall for Harry Potter-themed refreshments. Start with a pint of Butterbeer or a Polyjuice Prosecco Potion, then enjoy food including Hogwart's homemade pie, Hagrid's rock buns, sherbet lemon cakes and Sorting Hat cupcakes - as well as chocolate frogs. If you're a true Harry Potter fan then feel free to go dressed up as your favourite character.

It costs £24.50 for adults and £12 for children, with a discounted price for annual pass holders. Prebooking is essential on 0191 384 8028. Keep an eye out for the extra date being added.

Durham family events #5: Lambing watch, Houghall Farm

Love lambs? Who doesn't! Get into the swing of Spring with Houghall Farm Lambing Sunday. On Sunday March 17 between 11am and 3pm, head down to East Durham College's Houghall Campus near to the Durham Racecourse and see the animals, including pigs, sheep, cows, the horses in the equine centre, and the small animal care centre to see snakes, lizards, tortoises and small mammals. There'll also be art and craft activities.

Tickets cost £2 and free for under ones. Pay on the day.

Durham family events #6: British Science Week, Beamish Museum

Beamish Museum's events for British Science Week come to a conclusion on Saturday and Sunday March 16-17 with Just One Spark, which explores the history of the safety mining lamp. You can also have a go at building pictures using Beamish's carpet tangrams in the school!
