Durham Miners Gala road closures 2019 have been announced and will start at 6am on the day of the Big Meeting. We've got the full list below.

The Durham Miners Gala 2019 road closures mean that even push bikes will not be allowed to enter the majority of the centre of Durham for 14 hours.

There will also be some short term Big Meeting road closures in outlying County Durham villages to allow for individual community banner parades, including one the night before.

The Durham Miners Gala 2019 date is Saturday July 13 and organisers are expecting another large turnout, with 200,000 people enjoying the Big Meeting last year. Over the past few years Durham Police have increased the area of Durham Miners Gala road closures to ensure public safety. Emergency service and pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the day.

What roads are closed for Durham Miners Gala 2019?

The 2019 Durham Miners Gala road closures for the banner parade are:

Framwellgate Bridge; Silver Street; Market Place; Saddler Street; Owengate; North and South Bailey; Dun Cow Lane; Bow Lane; New Elvet Bridge; Elvet Bridge; Old Elvet; Territorial Lane; Elvet Waterside; New Elvet; Court Lane; Elvet Crescent; Church Street; Pelaw Leazes Lane; Hallgarth Street; Whinney Hill; Green Lane; Crossgate; Flass Street; Sutton Street; North Road (between Framwellgate Bridge and North Road roundabout); North Road (between Back Western Hill and North Road roundabout); Milburngate; Claypath.

Also, there will be some Durham Miners Gala road closures in villages around Durham city to allow for individual community banner parades.

In Bowburn the road closures for an hour early in the day include Wylam Street; Steavenson Street (back); Bow Street South; Runcie Road; Monteigne Drive; Surtees Avenue; Edward Avenue; Prince Charles Avenue (west).

In Derwentside, roads are not closed in Craghead but congestion is expected between 7.30-8am and 3.30-4.30pm. Also, the B6168 at the Morrison Industrial Estate and Castle Court, Annfield Plain, will be closed on the morning of Big Meeting day.

In Ferryhill Merrington Road, Main Street, Market Street and Market Place will be closed in the morning for an hour.

In Chilton, the roads closed are South View, New South View, Durham Road and Eden Terrace.

In Ferryhill Station, Commercial Street and Chilton Lane will both be closed.

In Spennymoor, the roads closed for the parade are Dundas Street, North Street, Jackson Street, Dickens Street, Cheapside and High Street.

When are the Durham Miners Gala road closures?

The Big Meeting road closures last from 6am to 8pm on Saturday July 13. The Bowburn Durham Miners Gala banner parade closures will be from 8.15am to 9.15am. The Annfield Plain banner parade road closure is from 7.30-8am. The Ferryhill banner parade road closure lasts from 7pm to 8pm the day before, Friday July 12. The Chilton closure is 8.15-9.45am on Saturday July 13. In Ferryhill Station, the road closure is from 8-9am. The Spennymoor banner parade road closure only lasts for half an hour, from 8-8.30am.

What traffic is banned during the Durham Miners Gala road closures?

No vehicles can use the roads including push bikes and motorbikes, and anyone breaching the order can be fined. Pedestrians and emergency vehicles are allowed to use the roads, as well as buses in some locations. For some of the roads such as Whinney Hill, Green Lane, Church Street and Hallgarth Street there is access for permit holders.
