Durham Cathedral events come in all shapes and sizes, from special services to family activities and music concerts. Here's what's on in Durham Cathedral for August 2019.

Durham Cathedral events #1: Durham Photographic Society Annual Exhibition

From Saturday August 3 to 31, the Durham Photographic society is holding its annual exhibition. The theme of this year's exhibition is 'the towering North East', and there are 60 images that illustrate aspects of the North East that make it such a special place. It's in the north nave aisle of the cathedral and is free.

Durham Cathedral events #2: Open Treasure, the Vikings in Northumbria

Throughout August and until September 28, the Open Treasure changing exhibition is the Vikings in Northumbria. You can read all about it in our Open Treasure changing exhibition story.

Durham Cathedral events #3: August History Walk

On Saturday August 10 is the August History Walk, at 10.30am. Have a walking tour of Durham Cathedral's historic woodlands and riverbanks guided by an expert walk leader. Durham Cathedral events #4: Concert by the Community of St Aidan and Hilda

This is on Saturday August 10 at 7pm and is a music concert given by Dave Bainbridge and Sally Minnear. It's part of the Celtic Summer School week in Durham organised by The Community of Aidan and Hilda, a globally dispersed Celtic New Monastic Community.

Durham Cathedral events #5: Organ Recital by Roger Sayer

This organ recital is on Wednesday August 14 at 7.30pm and is by Roger Sayer, organist and director of music at Temple Church. He'll be playing Marche Pontificale Widor, Fantaisie in A Franck, Choral Improvisation sur l’Ave Maris Stella (Tournemire, transcribed Duruflé) and Symphonie 3 Vierne. Durham Cathedral events #6: Viking crafts family fun

Learn more about Viking loom weaving and make your own woven creation to take home. This activity takes place between 10am and 12pm near the visitor desk inside the cathedral and is on Thursday August 15. The Durham Cathedral family fun costs £2, from the visitor desk.

It also takes place on Thursday August 22 and Thursday August 29, at 10am.

Durham Cathedral events #7: Rock Choir concert

The Rock Choir concert takes place on Friday August 16 at 7.30pm and features pop, rock and contemporary chart songs performed by the Durham, Chester-Le-Street and Sunderland Rock Choir.

Durham Cathedral events #8: Young Curators taster session

Taking place in the Education Centre on Tuesday August 20 at 1.30pm, this is an opportunity for people aged 11-16 to find out what happens behind the scenes at museums and cathedrals. Go along to learn more about Durham Cathedral's collections and how you can get involved.

Durham Cathedral events #9: Organ Recital - Ian Wicks

This Durham Cathedral organ recital is by Ian Wicks, headmaster of the Chorister School, Durham. It's on Wednesday August 21 at 7.30pm and he'll be playing Concert Overture in C minor by Alfred Hollins, Prelude and Fugue in G by Bach, Homage to Handel by Sigfrid Karg Elert, Benedictus by William Lloyd Webber, Fantasie Choral No. 2 in F Sharp minor by Percy Whitlock, Images by Owain Park , and Introduction Passacaglia and Fugue by Healey Willan.

Durham Cathedral events #10: Organ Recital - Simon Hogan

The latest in the Durham Cathedral organ recital programme, on Wednesday August 28 at 7.30pm it's the turn of Simon Hogan, assistant director of music at Southwell Minster. His debut solo recording was released in 2015.

Durham Cathedral events #11: Photography Evening

This Durham Cathedral Photography Evening takes place on Thursday August 29 at 6.30pm, and is a special opportunity to spend a summer evening with your camera inside Durham Cathedral. Tickets include a tea or coffee. No flash in the cathedral.

Tickets cost £10 per camera, £7.50 tickets for under 18s and students with valid student ID, or from the booking page.

Durham Cathedral events #12: Summer bat walk

On Friday August 30 at 7.45pm, enjoy a walk along the riverbanks to find out more about the bats of Durham, which might include pipistrelles, daubentons and noctules foraging for food.

The Durham Cathedral bat walk starts at the north door of the cathedral, off Palace Green. Take a torch and wear sturdy footwear, as there are steep slopes. All children must be accompanied at all times by an adult, and it is not suitable for very young children.
