There are always plenty of events at the cathedral taking place, from services to children's activities and music concerts. Here's what's happening in April 2019.

This month is also the time of the Easter school holidays in Durham, so there should be a few Durham Cathedral activities to keep the children entertained too.

#1: Spem in Alium - Durham Singers

On Saturday April 6 there'll be a special concert in the fabulous surroundings of Durham Cathedral. Spem in Alium will be familiar to anyone who's a fan of the film Fifty Shades of Grey, as it's the favourite music of the eponymous character. #2: Family Easter activities

Durham Cathedral's Easter activities will please all the family during the Durham school holidays. There are several craft activities: on Tuesday April 9 is Daffodil Headbands, while on Thursday April 11 is Easter Chicks, at 10.30am. They cost £2 per child.

#3: Family Friendly Durham Cathedral tours

On Wednesday April 10, families can enjoy special Durham Cathedral tours. Hear stories about St Cuthbert, discover whether the Prince Bishops of Durham really did ride out into battle and who built Durham Cathedral. It costs £10 per family. To book call 0191 338 7178.

#4: Durham Cathedral Easter services

As you might expect, there are several Durham Cathedral Easter services taking place across April. There's a Palm Sunday Eucharist on Sunday April 14 at 11.15am; on Thursday April 18 at 11am there'll be Maundy Thursday Sung Eucharist and Blessing of the Oils; later that day at 7.30pm is Maundy Thursday Sung Eucharist and Stripping of the Altar; on Good Friday, April 19 at 12 noon there's a focus on the cross in the Liturgy of Good Friday (The Three Hours). Then finally on Easter Day, Sunday April 21, there's a series of services throughout the day, to which everyone is welcome:

5am: Dawn Liturgy with Initiation and the First Communion of Easter

8am: Holy Communion

10am: Matins

11.15am: Sung Eucharist

3.30pm: Evensong

#5: Holy Week Address and Compline

Holy Week is the week before Easter, and Durham Cathedral will mark it with a series of special services. The Address and Compline is an evening service of contemplation and prayer that has been offered since the days of monastic life.

The Durham Cathedral Address and Compline takes place on Monday to Wednesday, April 15-17, at 7.30pm each day.
